HandCrafted Retreats

Danny Amazonas

Renowned artist turned quilter, Danny Amazonas has been creating a sensation at international quilting and art exhibitions around the world. and we feel honored he has accepted our invitation to teach at our inauguaral retreat in Bali.  For our Bali retreat, Danny is adapting one of his famous works to teach our participants the methods and tricks he uses to create each piece, leaving you with the ability to create a work of art of your own.  A pre-fused kit will be provided.

Danny was born in Taiwan and always loved art in all forms. As a jack of all trades, he tried painting, sculpture, and making gold jewellery, he even got into international cuisine!

He moved to New York City in the 1970's where he was a floral designer, in the early 80s, he was working with mosaic art, using various materials. He returned to his native home in Taiwan to care for his father where he discovered the world of colorful fabrics and the art of quilting.  He perceived quilting as the art of sewing pieces of fabric together to create a beautiful design.

As such, his own concoction of fiber-art while not knowing the basic requirements of quilting, he developed a unique ‘quilting technique’ for recreational purposes.  His work eventually evolved from mosaic-style patterns into free-form pieces. In 2012, using a new technique unprecedented in the field of fiber art, Danny's ‘Freehand Patchwork’ was born.

Freehand Patchwork is an unorthodox technique that is like painting with colorful fabric. The beauty of the original textile designs are fully expressed while freely interpreting the image of the textile art. This is something extraordinary that could not be achieved in painting. Using just rotary cutter and layers of overlapping fused fabric and having raw edges is something traditional quilters rarely do.
